Torrevieja is a multicultural seaside city and municipality located on the Costa Blanca in the province of Alicante, in south-eastern Spain.
It is situated 47km from Alicante to the north (Alicante Airport 36km) and 46km from Murcia in the southeast (Murcia Airport 28km). Barcelona is 570km and Madrid 445km.
Located between the sea and two large salt lakes (Las Salinas) it was originally a salt-mining and fishing village consisting of an ancient guard tower which gave the town its name (Torre Vieja (Spanish) means Old Tower) and some cottages.
Below is a picture of Torre del Moro, a replica of one of the many watch towers that lined the coast, which has a beautiful panoramic view out over the Mediterranean sea.
